There was a review in Runners World of a slightly larger version of your trainer project for holding a little more - car keys being a good idea! I've sen car keys threaded into laces before, but this looks like a more elegant solution...
the other plus is that this was free! There is one solution that I heard of that did this but one of the key things is that the sensor does not move about once strapped to the shoe.
